It’s women’s history month in the States, and I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence, but a photography exhibition about one of the most influential women in France has just opened!
Simone Veil was a very important French politician. Have you heard of her?
The Simone Veil “A European Destiny” exhibition has recently opened at Cité de l’Economie, a museum dedicated to economic education in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. It runs from now until October 31, 2022.
The exhibition features photos from the Paris Match archives. Paris Match is a weekly magazine similar to Life magazine in the States. It covers important cultural figures in different industries through photographs and in-depth features.
I didn’t know of Simone Veil before moving to France but I quickly learned she is an admired and respected figure in French culture!
After surviving deportation to Auschwitz by the Gestapo in 1944, Simone Veil later became the first woman to be named a State Minister in France and the first woman to be elected President of the European Parliament in 1979.
She is one of the few women buried at the Panthéon in Paris.
This exhibition offers an inside look into Simone Veil’s life, work, family, and experiences.
Noteworthy photos include her visit to Auschwitz as an adult, accompanied by her grandchildren, her time in office as the Health Minister in France, and her childhood on the shores of Nice, France.
