I was a bit nervous about selecting the trendy Café de Flore as the location of a shoot and interview with my friend Constance Arnoult, as the café has become a little bit cliché here in Paris. When I told her my doubts, she warmly exclaimed “Mais j’adore les clichés!” and all my worries subsided.
I love that Constance appreciates all things French, even if they are a little bit cliché because, well… I do, too! As a new resident of Saint Germain-des-Près, I couldn’t wait to talk to Constance about her life in Paris, her personal style and her projects here in the city!

Dis-moi ce que tu portes aujourd’hui!
Je porte un pantalon flare taille haute bleu marine sur mesure Philippine Janssens. J’ai découvert cette marque le mois dernier, et elle permet de confectionner le pantalon de ses rêves : le tissu, la couleur, la forme j’ai tout choisi ! Je porte également une marinière Karl Marc John et un trench coat navy en laine Maje. Une gavroche pour accessoiriser la tenue, et une touche de rouge sur les lèvres.
Qu’est-ce que tu fais ici à Paris?
J’ai quitté la Touraine pour poursuivre mes études à la Sorbonne puis après un an de transition à Lille je suis revenue travailler ici. En ce moment je suis chargée de communication chez Maison Caulières, une marque de cosmétique partenaire de la chaine hôtelière Rosewood, dont l’Hôtel de Crillon à Paris. En parallèle, je poursuis mes études de communication.
Comment décris-tu ton style?
Je m’efforce de garder un style chic mais surtout de porter des tenues dans lesquelles je suis à l’aise. Pour ce faire, il faut donner l’impression que l’on n’en fait pas trop. Je pense que l’essentiel est de trouver des structures adaptées à sa silhouette.
Je suis assez petite, j’aime donc jouer sur les volumes et les longueurs : un beau pantalon taille haute, un blazer épaulé, structuré et bien coupé ou encore pour une tenue plus habillée : une robe très longue avec de hauts talons et un jolie ceinture pour marquer la taille.
A l’inverse, je sais que certaines formes et longueurs ne me vont pas du tout : je ne porte jamais de chaussures plates ou de robes midi.
Quelles sont tes « essentiels » garde de robe?
Je ne pourrais clairement pas me passer de mes flares taille hautes ! J’en ai de toutes les couleurs. Je trouve tous les ans de superbes flares chez Amenapih et je ne les quitte pas de l’hiver.
Le col roulé noir est un basic chic, sexy et confortable pour les femmes et les hommes.
Un beau costume me parait également être un essentiel. On peut dissocier les pièces, associer le blazer avec un jean, le pantalon avec un chemisier, ou encore porter le total look avec des talons en soirée.
Pour finir, un manteau long, Camel ou Navy : ça va avec tout !
Quelles sont tes « essentiels » de beauté? As tu des conseils pour la beauté française?
En termes de maquillage, j’avoue ne pas trop aimer le fond de teint. Il laisse parfois un aspect plâtre et orangé sur la peau. J’utilise désormais un produit palliant l’effet « teint de zombie » au cœur de la période hivernale : le Sun 365 de Lancaster. Alors attention ce n’est pas un autobronzant, c’est un produit teinté à mélanger avec sa crème hydratante avant de se maquiller. Le produit s’enlève très bien lorsque je me démaquille et l’effet bonne mine est vraiment instantané.
Autre découverte récente et vraiment cool : La pâte grise de la marque Payot. Le produit pulvérise les boutons dans la nuit.
Qu’est-ce que c’est le « style français » pour toi? As tu des conseils pour les femmes qui commencent imiter le « style français » ?
C’est tendre vers l’élégance, la sobriété et la subtilité.
Décris la tenue typique pour toi dans ces situations:
- Un lundi au travail: un pantalon flare noir, un col roulé noir et une veste plus colorée à carreaux ou en tweed par exemple
- Un samedi avec tes amis: Une mini- jupe, un chemisier, des cuissardes plates et un blazer
- La première rencontre avec un amoureux potentiel: Une tenue où je me sens sexy mais sans être mal à l’aise. Rien de pire que de tenter de cacher un décolleté trop plongeant ou de tirer sur une jupe trop courte ! Je pense qu’une combinaison peut être un bon compromis. C’est chic, sexy, ça allonge la silhouette et on s’y sent bien. Une adresse pour trouver une combinaison sublime : Carolina Ritzler.
- Une soirée ou un dîner spéciale: Quand j’ai vraiment une soirée habillée, je porte une robe longue fluide et fendue, Bash par exemple.
Où est-ce que tu trouves l’inspiration pour tes tenues?
De nombreuses choses m’inspirent, mais je parlerais en premier lieu du vintage, de manière globale : la mode, l’architecture, le cinéma, la musique … Je suis très inspirée par les vieux films, les icones des années 60/70 et de manière un peu plus précise par les comédies musicales. Fan inconditionnelle de Jacques Demy et Michel Legrand, j’aime leur univers coloré, fantaisie et retro.
Où préfères-tu faire du shopping à Paris? (ou en France!)
On trouve beaucoup de pièces vintage vraiment sympa, surtout à Paris ! Je trouve régulièrement de jolies choses chez Gavroche vintage. J’essaie d’acheter de moins en moins de choses chez Zara, Mango ou H&M (Oui, je sais, c’est difficile et mea culpa, j’avoue le faire encore un peu). Mais finalement on trouve de marques sympa et écoresponsables pour des prix assez similaires.
Je conseille aussi la location : on se lasse très vite des vêtements que l’on porte et louer des tenues pour une soirée ou pour des vacances semble être un bon compromis ! J’ai découvert il y a peu le concept « d’une robe un soir ». Ils ont de tenues vraiment hautes gammes (costumes Yves Saint Laurent, robes Elie Saab, sacs Chanel…) à louer pour quelques jours. Ils commencent également tout juste à développer une gamme un peu plus casual (Isabel Marant, Jacquemus, Rouje, Bash… )
Qu’est-ce tu aimes le plus sur la vie à Paris?
La sensation d’infini, propre aux grandes capitales je suppose. Je pense que l’on peut passer toute une vie à Paris sans jamais avoir tout vu, la ville est en évolution permanente : de nouveaux endroits, de nouvelles rencontres, de nouvelles opportunités…
C’est une vie à 100 à l’heure, passionnante et très riche culturellement. C’est d’ailleurs pour cette raison que j’ai toujours voulu vivre à Paris. Ancienne khâgneuse, férue de danse, c’est un privilège énorme pour moi de vivre au cœur de cette ville, où les rues foisonnent de musées, de théâtres et de bouquinistes.
Ta meilleure copine vient à Paris pour la journée. Où l’emmènes-tu ?
Difficile de tout caser dans une seule journée ! Mais par exemple : un brunch très français chez Casimir dans le 10e pour commencer, une ballade dans le jardin du Luxembourg puis sur les quais de seine, un passage par les puces de saint Ouen pour dénicher quelques trésors, une visite du petit palais, un diner à l’Alcazar et pour finir, un ballet au l’Opéra (D’ailleurs, il faut absolument aller voir le lac, à Bastille en ce moment, c’est sublime).
Tell me what you’re wearing today!
I’m wearing a high-waisted navy pant that was tailored by Philippine Janssens. I discovered this brand last month and it allows you to create the pant of your dreams: the fabric, the color, the shape – I chose everything! I’m also wearing a striped Karl Marc John shirt and a wool wrap coat by Maje. A newsboy cap to accessorize the outfit, and a touch of red on the lips.
What are you doing here in Paris?
I left La Touraine to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. After one year in Lille, I returned to work in Paris. Right now, I’m in charge of press and communications for Maison Caulières, a cosmetics brand that partnered with the hotel chain Rosewood (Hôtel de Crillon). At the same time I’m pursuing a master’s degree in communications!
How would you describe your style?
I try to keep a chic style but I especially try to wear outfits in which I am comfortable. To do this, you have to give the impression that you didn’t do too much thinking in the morning! I think the main thing is to find clothing with the right form and fit adapted to your own body.
I am quite petite, so I like playing with volumes and lengths: a beautiful high-waisted pant, a padded-shoulder blazer that is properly structured and well-cut or for a dressier outfit: a very long dress with high heels and a pretty waistband to highlight the waist.
On the other hand, I know that certain shapes and lengths do not suit me at all: I never wear flat shoes or midi dresses!
What are your wardrobe essentials?
I obviously could not do without my high-waisted flares! I have them in every color. Every year, I find great flares at Amenapih and I won’t do without them in winter!
The black turtleneck is a basic chic, sexy and comfortable top for both women and men.
A beautiful suit also seems to me to be essential. You can separate the top and bottom, wear the blazer with jeans, the pants with a blouse, or wear the whole suit together with heels in the evening!
Lastly, a long coat in camel or navy because it goes with everything!
What are your beauty essentials? Do you have any “French beauty” advice?
In terms of makeup, I have to say I really don’t like foundation! It sometimes leaves a residue or orange tint on my skin. I now use a product that solves “zombie complexion” problem that you get in the middle of winter: The Sun 365 cream from Lancaster. It’s not a self-tanner, but rather a tinted product to mix with your moisturizer before applying makeup. The product comes off very easily when I remove my makeup at night and the glowing effect is instantaneous!
Another cool recent discovery: The gray paste from Payot. It gets rid of any pimples during the night!
What does “French style” mean to you? Do you have any advice for women who want to adopt a more French style?
For me, it has a tendency towards elegance, dignity and subtlety.
Describe the typical outfit you would wear in these situations:
- A Monday at work: A black flared pant, a black turtleneck, and a colored blazer in a checkered or tweed fabric.
- A Saturday with friends: A mini skirt, a blouse, flat over-the-knee boots and a blazer
- The first date with a potential boyfriend: An outfit that I feel sexy in but not uncomfortable. There’s nothing worse than trying to hide yourself a top that plunge too far down or pulling on a skirt that is too short! I think that a one-piece jumpsuit can be a nice compromise. It’s chic, sexy, and it elongates the silhouette so you feel good. My favorite place for finding jumpsuits is Carolina Ritzler.
- A night out or a special dinner: When I really have to dress up, I wear a long, fluid dress with a slit, from Bash for example!
Where do you find inspiration for your outfits?
So many things inspire me, but I would say first of all, vintage: style, architecture, cinema, music… I’m really inspired by old films and the icons from the 60s and 70s, specifically the musicals from that time. I’m a huge fan of Jacques Demy and Michel Legrand – I just love their colorful, retro universe full of fantasy.
Where do you prefer to go shopping in Paris, or in France?
You can find so many beautiful vintage pieces in Paris. I regularly find beautiful things at Gavroche Vintage. I try to buy less and less from Zara, Mango and H&M. It’s hard, and sometimes it’s difficult so I do it just occasionally! But in the end, there are so many nice brands that are eco-friendly for prices similar enough.
I also advise renting clothes. I get tired very quickly of my current clothes, so renting outfits for an evening or for a holiday seems to be a good compromise! I recently discovered the concept of “Une robe un soir”. They have really high-end outfits like Yves Saint Laurent costumes, Elie Saab dresses, and Chanel bags to rent for a few days. They are also just starting to develop a slightly more casual range of pieces from Isabel Marant, Jacquemus, Rouje, and Bash.
What do you love most about living in Paris?

The feeling of infinite possibilities which is typical to the big capitals, I suppose. I think we can spend a lifetime in Paris without ever having seen everything. The city is constantly changing: new places, new encounters, new opportunities…
It’s a life at 100 miles per hour, exciting, and very culturally rich. This is the main reason that I have always wanted to live in Paris. As a former literature student and dance lover, it is a huge privilege for me to live in the heart of this city, where the streets are full of museums, theaters and booksellers.
Your best friend is coming to Paris for just one day. Where do you take her?!
It’s difficult to do everything in just one day! But, we’d start with a very French brunch at Casimir in the 10th, then take a walk in the Jardin du Luxembourg, then along the banks of the Seine River, then pass by the Saint Ouen flea market to discover some little treasures, a visit to the Petit Palais, a dinner at l’Alcazar and finally a ballet at l’Opéra! By the way, you have to go see Le Lac at the Bastille Opera right now – it’s amazing!
